Houston Independent School District (ISD) Nutrition Services published this article after experiencing challenges in their efforts to ensure healthy, well-balanced school breakfasts for students in Houston, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. It happened after some worried parents in the ISD’s schools continuously complained through calls and emails about their breakfast’s high sugar content that they argued was unhealthy for children (Lengyel et al., 2020). Therefore, Houston ISD used this article to respond and provide their perspective regarding the challenges and their efforts in ensuring the students get healthy breakfasts.
At first, Houston ISD gave a history of the meal programs in the U.S., stating that the School Breakfast Program started as a pilot-grant program aimed to help the nationally needy children by serving them breakfasts. Moreover, Congress permanently authorized the program in 1975 aiming to provide students with one-quarter of their daily nutrient requirements (Lengyel et al., 2020).
