In the article “Ronald Reagan and the End of the Cold War: The Debate Continues,” Michael Cox highlights the contemporary observers and historians’ heated argument about President Ronald Reagan’s role in ending the Cold War, particularly his strategy, leadership, and diplomacy. Additionally, Cox covers Reagan’s emotional intelligence, military buildup, political credibility, ideological offensive abroad, and his suspicions. Cox also views Reagan as a president at a very critical time in world history, and even if he mentions him as a transformational leader, he highlights another argument of the two possible sides of this political leader in his efforts to end the Cold War. At first, before Reagan came to office as the head of state, the 1970s, which he refers to as a “decade of neglect,” had tended to weaken the US, where diplomacy was the most preferred strategy towards the Soviet Union. Therefore, by the time Ronald took over the White House, Communism was growing, and it almost seemed impossible for the US government to stop it. According to Cox, during this time, it seemed that the Cold War would continue for a long time but considering various aspects of the conflict, the majority anticipated that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was winning the War. Furthermore, Cox states that the Soviet troops had just launched an operation in Afghanistan to prop up a new but faltering state. Also, according to Cox, “Its supporters in the Third World from Central America to southern Africa seemed to be sweeping all opposition before them.
