  3. Classifications in academic programs based on gender;
  4. Classifications in sports programs based on gender; and
  5. Classifications to assign students to specific schools for racial balance.

In a 500-750-word essay, address the following for the group that you have chosen:

  1. Summarize the factual background on how the students are classified;
  2. Identify the legal issues presented by these classifications; and
  3. Describe what equal protection requires.

Include at least five references in your essay. At least three of the five references should cite U.S. Supreme Court cases.

Gender inequality has faced various challenges, which have extended to K-12 female students who have been discriminated against in sports based on gender. This is due to the perception that participation in sports is not important for girls and stereotypes based on physical ability. This paper will analyze gender-based classifications in sports programs particularly, factual background, legal issues about the classifications, and equal protection requirements.

                                           Factual Background

Historically, women have been perceived as weaker and less interested in participating in sports than men. Due to this perception, many girls did not have the opportunity to participate in sports in schools with regard to facilities available and intense competition levels. However, according to Broadway (2016), the Title IX of the Educational Amendment of 1972 ensures that all students are treated equally, thus requiring school sports programs to shape their regulations to ensure gender equality for K-12 students. Since 1972, Title IX requires K-12 schools are required to create and provide equal opportunities in school activities, including sports programs. According to this law, all institutions receiving federal funding should provide equal opportunities and resources for female students. Thus, a classified gender-based regulation in schools’ sports programs, including competitive sports, helps minimize male students’ domination in sports and gives female students an equal opportunity to participate (Coleman,2017).
