In adolescence, individuals are going through crucial changes and growth. Some of the intellectual, social, personality, and physical developmental changes that adolescents impact the way they undergo impact the way they reason, think, make decisions, focus their attention, and relate to others (Drury, 2019). As adolescents seek rewards in connecting with their peers and trying new things and experience more emotional and pushback, they get opportunities to create new ways of being and seek identity in the world. Even though these changes can be frustrating and confusing, they are essential for the development of an individual’s sense of self. Thus, with regard to these changes, there are pros and cons of the adolescent world.

Adolescence is viewed as a difficult time because at this stage, where individuals face numerous challenges due to the ongoing changes. At first, adolescents are likely to experience sexual problems, especially because the dramatic changes can be worrying to some of them. Some are reluctant to ask questions or seek guidance about sexual issues, while others are shy. According to Elder and Johnson ( 2018), most people have their first experience of sex during adolescence, thus increasing the risk of pregnancy at this stage. Besides early pregnancy, adolescents who start having sex at this age are at a higher risk of health problems such as contracting sexually transmitted diseases.  

Additionally, the adolescent world presents a greater risk of depression and anxiety.  Adolescents experience an expansion in their capacity to view themselves through others’ perspectives and opinions. As the “bonding hormone,” oxytocin, increases and the brain’s social centers at full volume, adolescents start becoming more self-conscious as they start to picture the kind of people they want to become and how they can develop the world they wish to live in (Elder & Johnson, 2018).
