The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights

Delegates from 13 states drafted a remarkable blueprint for self-government, the US Constitution, in the summer of 1787 in Philadelphia (Magliocca, 2018). The Constitution was a guide for self-government and contained many provisions requiring the federal government to respect individual citizen’s basic rights. Moreover, seven articles make the US Constitution and guide the way the government should operate and how it should be structured. The first three articles describe how the three branches of government, Legislative, Executive, and Judicial, and their respective functions (Magliocca, 2018). Moreover, there is a system of checks and balances that ensures no branch is powerful than the other. The subsequent four articles explain the relationship between the federal government and the states, establishes the US Constitution as supreme, and states the amendment and ratification process.

Even though the first draft of the US Constitution was remarkable, particularly in establishing three strong branches of government and the system of checks and balances, it was still deeply flawed. For instance, the draft did not contain a specific declaration of individual citizen’s rights. According to Levy (2008), the draft was specific about what the government should do and operate, but it did not specify what it should not do …………for help with this assignment contact us via Email Address: consulttutor10@gmail.com
