Psychological and Environmental Factors That Played a Significant Role in Early Childhood of Serial Killers

                                                Introduction

Serial might not be an exciting topic to talk about to everyone, but this dark truth exists around us. Based on the number of serial killings, it has been estimated that, on average, we might pass a serial killer at least one time during our life. Someone that kills three or more people is called a serial killer. There are about 3000 known serial killers in history that the united states account for the highest level of 60% of the total number(Butler,2016). The Reason is still unknown and under investigation, but there is no doubt that environmental and psychological factors are involved.

                                                  Thesis

The following paper shall conduct a series of potential biological and environmental factors that have significantly increased the number of serial killers in the community. These potential factors shall be interconnected with human development and nature effects on every single stage.

                                             Literature Review

Numerous studies have shown that various significant factors in an individual’s childhood can contribute to serial killing during adulthood. At first, studies on the psychological factors leading to serial killing indicate that experiences in early childhood, especially abandonment, abuse, and loneliness, contribute to the serial killer committing their crimes (Reid et al., 2019). In a study on the environmental cause, Bloodworth (2015) found that the absence of a father or a father figure and lack of socialization during early childhood can increase aggressive and violent behavior later in adulthood. Additionally, Reebye’s (2005) research on attachment styles and aggressive behavior also supports the view that psychological and physical abuse are factors in the development of a serial killer. Also, there is evidence supporting the notion that poor, fearful and insecure parent-child attachments can lead to violent behavior in adulthood.

Most scholars have drawn a connection between the childhood stage of serial killers and their adulthood stage. Their findings show that most serial killers have been projecting similar behavior since their childhood stage (Reid et al., 2019). However, considering the available studies, it is evident that limited studies have been carried out regarding serial killers experinces  in early childhood, especially their deifferences and commonalities in their childhood in order to determine potential life events and experinces leading to serial killing. Many aspects of the serial killers’ lives should be studied to determine why an individual would commit such multiple murders. This study will attempt to identify and explain the main psychological and environmental factors in childhood that lead to a person becoming a serial killer.
