Review the IOM report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” and explore the “Campaign for Action: State Action Coalition” website. In a 1,000-1,250 word paper, discuss the influence the IOM report and state-based action coalitions have had on nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing workforce development, and how they continue to advance the goals for the nursing profession.

Describe the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative that led to the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” Outline the four “Key Messages” that structure the IOM Report recommendations. Explain how these have transformed or influenced nursing practice, nursing education and training, nursing leadership, and nursing workforce development. Provide examples.

Discuss the role of state-based action coalitions. Explain how these coalitions help advance the goals specified in the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” Research the initiatives on which your state’s action coalition is working. Summarize two initiatives spearheaded by your state’s action coalition. Discuss the ways these initiatives advance the nursing profession.

Describe barriers to advancement that currently exist in your state and explain how nursing advocates in your state overcome these barriers.

In 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released an eight-recommendation report on the US healthcare improvements which nurses could guide. According to Stringer (2019), the IOM report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” aimed at furnishing nurses a guide that would steer hospital-based services replacement with value-based services, thus focusing on community wellness and provision. Therefore, this paper will analyze “Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative” that fostered the IOM report, the major messages that shape the IOM report recommendations, how they have impacted nursing practice, nursing education and training, nursing leadership, and nursing workforce development and their continued promotion of nursing profession’s goals.

In July 2009, “Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)” made an online announcement informing that it had launched an initiative to identify and focus on the challenges facing the nursing profession and give recommendations that would guide the transformation of delivering health care in the US. The functioning of the RWJF makes it a leading public health philanthropy, working alongside other charities to promote equitable and available healthcare for all Americans (RWJF, 2009).
