Using your experience in perceiving either Blume’s “The Eternal City” (Figure1-3) or David Alfaro Siqueiros’s “Echo of a Scream” (Figure 1-2), discuss how education and experience changed your perception of the art. Were your values identified at all? If so, how? Do you agree with the authors’ assertion that participation is the most fundamental of the basic distinctions of art? Why? Regarding the basic distinctions of art, participation is the most fundamental because it is the only distinction making art interactive. Therefore, I agree with the authors’ assertion because the audience’s behavior and participation are the only way a work of art can become interactive or change the meaning. Alongside going considering how an artwork will look or sound like to the observer, artists base their art on audience participation in order to make the work interactive.  Audience interactions with a work of art are a vital aspect of art, which can only be achieved by ensuring that participation is the most fundamental distinction of art (Boden & Edmonds, 2019). Therefore, the interaction and behavior of art are more important than any other element.

Moreover, for a work of art to be considered interactive, what matters most is the audience’s behavioral response and participation level. When an artist engages the audience, it goes past how they look or listen to the art. It is also important to consider beyond how the audience looks at the art, their reaction to the art, and whether the artwork will positively or negatively impact them. Therefore, an artist does not produce art that is only appealing to merely themselves.
