Individuals fought for constitutional amendments and legislation expanding voting rights based on race and ethnicity, gender, disability, age, and other factors at all levels, making voting rights a bipartisan issue. Congress passed the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, and significant efforts were made to avoid voter suppression (Zelizer 15). The Supreme Court overturned the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder, allowing states and jurisdictions with a history of voter suppression to pass restrictive voter identification laws (Zelizer 15). As a result of these actions, people who are already underrepresented in politics suffer disproportionately negative and demonstrable consequences. Thus it is surprising that the historical record clearly demonstrates that criminalizing unauthorized entry and re-entry is based on racist principles (Ngai 20).

Since many of the remaining sections of the Voting Rights Act have been vigorously challenged, I think there is substantial evidence that these laws prevent citizens from voting and discriminate disproportionately against African-Americans and Hispanics……………for help with this assignment contact us via email Address: consulttutor10@gmail.com
