QUESTION 1

Welcome! Start here.

This activity will help you create the building blocks for your Show What You Know assignment. You will draw on both articles you’ve summarized for the Pop Culture Bites and Zooming Out assignments as well as your own opinions about the topic. Do not use the articles from M.A.P. It Out.

This is not a test, and you do not have to complete it in one sitting. You can save individual answers to come back later and revise as needed. Once you have completed the entire assignment, click “Submit Test” at the bottom.

After you submit, you can review your responses and/or your instructor’s feedback by reopening the attempt and clicking on the first question.

Later this week, you’ll complete your final assignment, Show What You Know. In that assignment, you will have:

1. A thesis statement

2. At least two points that support your thesis

3. A conclusion

To do this, you’ll need to use two articles on the same topic for support and context. These will be the articles you wrote about for your Pop Culture Bites and Zooming Out assignments. List the titles of both articles here.

Note: To earn credit for this question, you must use quotes from both of these articles in this activity, and both articles must be on the same topic.

A thesis statement should be one sentence that states your position on the issue.

Example: The Big Bang Theory should have ended with Season 6, when it was still in its prime. This example works well because it makes a clear claim and includes specific details.

In the box below, write a thesis statement for your Show What You Know assignment.

A topic sentence should identify one topic (or point) that supports your thesis.

Example: The Big Bang Theory became great when two female characters were added to the cast of three men and one woman in Season 3. This topic sentence works because it is specific, focuses on one topic, and develops the idea conveyed in the thesis. (Hint: write all of your topic sentences before adding quotes and explanations. This will help you stay on topic.)

In the box below, write a topic sentence for your first supporting point.

Find a quote that connects to the topic of the paragraph. The quote might corroborate the claim you make in your topic sentence, provide a counterargument, or present supporting evidence.

Example:Quote: “It became a great show…once Penny stopped being the only female lead” (Murray, 2018, para. 9).How it relates: Penny had been the only woman. When Bernadette and Amy were added, Howard and Sheldon were balanced, and their characters became less one-dimensional.This example works well because the explanation after the quote clarifies how the quote supports the topic sentence; the writer is doing more here than just restating the quote in their own words.

Choose at least one quote from either your Pop Culture Bites or Zooming Out article that supports your first topic sentence. Include the quote in the box below. Then, explain how this quote relates to the topic sentence.

QUESTION 5

Your next point will begin with another topic sentence. Remember, each topic sentence supports the thesis.

By Season 6, jokes were beginning to repeat, and characters were becoming caricatures of themselves.

In the box below, write a topic sentence for your second supporting point.

QUESTION 6

Now, support your second topic sentence with a quote. Make sure it’s from the other article (Pop Culture Bites or Zooming Out), as you will need to have quotes from both in your Show What You Know assignment.

Quote: “Everyone is just glumly going through the motions, stuck in the tracks they’ve carved out for themselves over the years. It’s like watching a museum exhibit of a sitcom made with mannequins and miserable circus bears” (Heritage, 2018, para. 5).

How it relates: It seems the writers ran out of jokes and repeated the same cliches over and over.

Choose a quote from the other article that supports your second topic sentence.

Include the quote in the box below. Explain how this quote relates to the topic sentence.

If you have a third supporting point, write a topic sentence in the box below.

QUESTION 8

Choose a quote from either article that supports your third topic sentence. Include the quote in the box below. Explain how this quote relates to the topic sentence.

Remember the original thesis statement? It was, “The Big Bang Theory should have ended with Season 6, when it was still in its prime.” This example says the same thing but sounds different.

The Big Bang Theory hit its stride when more female characters were added, but the later seasons only provided flat characters and jokes at nerds’ expense. The show should have ended with Season 6, when it was still funny.

Restate your thesis using different language.

Solution

                                               Question 1-Gather The Right Pieces

Thesis

The whole theme of the game “The Last of Us Part II” was centered around violence, hatred, destruction, and obsession, but in the end, it forces players into humanity.

Point One

Ellie and Abby are both obsessed with getting revenge on the person who killed someone close to them, but although late, Abby learns that revenge doesn’t help you cope at all.

Motamayor (2020, para. 8) states that “revenge did nothing to heal the void inside her, so we spent our time with Abby in a messy search for redemption. Abby spends the game’s story trying to keep a boy named Lev and his sister safe.”

According to this quote, when Abby is aware of her “new nature,” she realizes that this is not the kind of person she wants to be, but there is some hope of her true self and becoming something more than just survival is evident with her encounter with Lev and his sister.
