In chapter 4, the discussed concepts, particularly vagueness and ambiguity, might make an analysis of a statement more challenging. Therefore, ambiguity entails a statement having various interpretations. As Facione and Gittens (2016) state, ambiguity occurs when a statement has many meanings, and the uncertainty related to it leads to troublesome misunderstandings. For instance, the sentence “John walked outside with his brother holding his phone” has various interpretations. For instance, either John or his brother could be holding the phone. On the other hand, vagueness regards statements that lack certainty or are not clearly expressed, thus giving leading to insufficient clarity. Vague statements have unclear boundaries and an imprecise meaning (Facione & Gittens, 2016). For instance, the statement “John is fast” does not clarify what he is really fast at. For instance, John could be fast in running, swimming, or in calculations.
