Describe how the city of Boston and the people living there changed between 1850 and 1900?
The city of Boston experienced some changes between 1850 and 1900 that made it rise to one of the most prosperous seaport towns in the US. The differences that ensured such successful periods were directing attention from one set of problems to another, for instance, shifting from trade to manufacturing, politics to business, and depression to prosperity. This transitional period in history changed not only the city but also the people living in it.
At first, the city of Boston was primarily a trade city for its previous years but in the 1900s it transitioned into an industrial city. This transition influenced the arrangement of the physical form of the city where the population in the city rise from about 20000 to 1 million locals thus turning the city into a metropolis. While Boston was formally more of a seaport city, it acquired 31 cities and towns after spreading over a 10-mile radius in the early 20th century. The old settlement became the main zone by turning into an industrial center. Also., besides industrialization, the city experienced changes in increased settlement and education.
Furthermore, the increasing population in Boston also diversified due to largescale immigration. Many European immigrants were coming to Boston and they played a significant role in improving the city’s economy in this period.
