Annotated Bibliography
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, periodicals, reliable websites, etc.) a writer has used for researching a topic. In MLA formatting, they are usually called Works Cited pages.
An annotationis a summary of the source and an evaluation of how it might be helpful to the writer in a research project. Thus, an annotated bibliography includes a citation, summary, and evaluation of each of your sources. Your annotation should include 1.) a clear statement of the writer’s argument or big idea, 2.) a supporting detail or two that the writer uses to back up the big idea, and 3.) a description of how you as a writer think this will specifically fit with your argument.
Your annotated bibliography is your chance to figure out what other experts on your topic have to say so that you can figure out what you want to say in response. Doing thorough work on your annotated bibliography will make your job easier when it comes to writing your research paper because you will see how to put your thesis or debatable claim in conversation with others. Thus you should aim to find sources with a range of responses to your topic.
Follow MLA formatting, which means your sources should be listed in alphabetical order by writer’s last name where available or by the first word of the title if there is no author.
In preparing for your research paper, you need to write and submit an annotated bibliography, due on Thursday, 11/18. Your annotated bibliography (worth 10% of your final grade) should include a minimum of 6 secondary sources appropriate for college-level research.

Lamott, Anne. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Anchor Books, 1995.
Lamott’s book offers honest advice on the nature of a writing life, complete with its insecurities and failures. Taking a humorous approach to the realities of being a writer, the chapters in Lamott’s book are wry and anecdotal and offer advice on everything from plot development to jealousy, from perfectionism to struggling with one’s own internal critic. In the process, Lamott includes writing exercises designed to be both productive and fun.
Lamott offers sane advice for those struggling with the anxieties of writing, but her main project seems to be offering the reader a reality check regarding writing, publishing, and struggling with one’s own imperfect humanity in the process. Rather than a practical handbook to producing and/or publishing, this text is indispensable because of its honest perspective, its down-to-earth humor, and its encouraging approach. Several of the chapters in Part 1 address the writing process and would serve to generate discussion on students’ own drafting and revising processes. Some of the writing exercises would also be appropriate for generating classroom writing exercises. Students should find Lamott’s style both engaging and enjoyable.

Cassegård, Carl. “Eco-Marxism and the critical theory of nature: two perspectives on ecology and dialectics.” Distinktion: Journal of social theory 18.3 (2017): 314-332.
Cassegård’s article explores the relationship between two current theories, the critical theory, and eco-Marxism, which both focus on having a broader view of Marxism. Cassegård analyses Foster, Burkett and other eco-Marxists’ criticism on critical theory and argue that the cause of the friction between the two perceptive is rooted in different conceptions of materialism and dialectics. Also, Cassegård offers his criticism of Foster’s use of an Epicurean-inspired model of dialectics in an attempt to enhance the unity of method in society and nature study. Also, Cassegård covers Theodor Adorno’s critical theory of nature to show that this perspective provides theoretical tools for understanding the link between capitalism and nature. Cassegård’s arguments will be useful in the current paper, especially in showing that critical theory can be very useful in understanding the current ecological crisis than eco-Marxism, mainly by providing a dialectical approach to categories of society and nature.
Hossain, Mahroof. “Psychoanalytic theory used in English literature: A descriptive study.” Global Journal of Human-Social Science: Linguistics & Education 17.1 (2017): 41-46.
According to Hossain, psychoanalysis is one of the contemporary theories used in English literature. Hossain’s work aims to examine where psychoanalysis theory has been applied by authors in their works in English literature. With regard to the analysis of literary text, Hossain found that psychoanalysis is a very useful and powerful tool, especially in enhancing a text’s legitimacy by influencing literary production. Additionally, this article highlights the use of Freud’s concepts in explicating literary texts, thus equating the text to the author’s psyche and giving a profound insight into the author’s unconscious.
