Question
Does social support moderate between depression and suicidal ideation with adolescences in low-income African Americans?
Solution
Depression and Suicidal Ideation among Low-income African American Adolescents
Depressive symptoms are one of the main predictors of suicidal ideation but this relationship has received little empirical attention among African Americans adolescents (Scardera et al., 2020). Social support can be important especially during adolescence, where teens are experiencing major changes in social responsibilities and roles and face an increased risk of mental health problems. Traditionally African Americans adolescents have had the lowest suicidal rates, but despite the decline in overall suicidal ideation rates, the rates are increasing among low-income African American adolescents who have limited attention (Price & Khubchandani, 2019). Another area with little attention is the connection between depression and suicide ideation and various forms of social support among low-income African American adolescents particularly the extent to which social support moderates the relationship between these two mental health problems. This paper will examine this connection through three forms of social support including family, peer, and community support, and their influence particularly in moderating the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation in low-income African American adolescents.
At first regarding family support, adolescence is a period characterized by changing family relations but family support is significant for effective psychological adjustment among adolescents especially from low-income families. In African American families, family support is culturally highly valuable because historically, family connectedness was important in copping within an antagonistic society (Campbell-Grossman et al., 2016). Furthermore, family connectedness is among the important and consistent communal and cultural values that African Americans promote in their community. According to Price and Khubchandani, (2019), the African American culture emphasizes the significance of social bonds, the interdependence of people, and the extended self. As a result, among African American adolescents, family support has emerged as a protective factor against experiences of suicidal ideation. However, in low-income African American families, adolescents are closer to their parents than any other members of their social environment thus this closeness has a direct impact in moderating suicidal ideation and depression.…………for help with this assignment contact us via email Address: consulttutor10@gmail.com
