Climate Change and Its Effects on Antarctica
Antarctica is a crucial part of the Earth system, but the continent is greatly affected by climate change. However, in this continent, high-resolution records of physical and biological indicators of contemporary change are caused by climate change. Furthermore, this evidence of climate change in Antarctica has stretched beyond the continent and can be found worldwide. Antarctica is one of the fastest-warming regions on the planet (Ylizarde et al., 2018). Although an air temperature increase in 3°C in Antarctica may not seem too much but it is five times the mean rate of global warming in the world. Therefore, climate change occurs at a greater rate than global climate change (Overland et al., 2019). Moreover, the warming in this continent has resulted in changes in the physical and living environment. For instance, due to the changes in sea ice conditions, penguin colonies’ distribution has altered. There is also increased colonization by plants resulting from the melting of perennial snow and ice covers. In Antarctica, there has being a long-term decline in the Krill population caused by reduced sea ice cover. The ice cover in this continent has undergone large changes, and many glaciers have retreated. Therefore, this paper will analyze climate change in Antarctica, rise in temperature, ice melting, and their effects on the animal population, fish food, and algae growth.
Regarding changes in the physical environment, Antarctica is experiencing the most rapid warming across the globe. According to Giuseppe et al. (2021), for the first time on record, this continent has registered a temperature above 20°C, thus increasing fears of climate instability in the world’s greatest ice repository.
