Construct a Rogerian Argument ASSIGNMENT:
As you learned in this unit, a Rogerian argument is one that presents two sides of a debate and argues for a solution that will satisfy both sides. Given two articles presenting opposing sides of an issue (mandatory uniforms in schools), construct your own 2-3 page Rogerian argument essay in which you attempt to arrive at a workable solution or “middle ground.” In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone. Article 1: “School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies” Article 2: “Dressing Diversity: Politics of Difference and the Case of School Uniforms” A. Rogerian Argument
For a long time, there has been a debate on the importance of uniforms in schools. Those arguing for school uniforms claim that it mitigates negative conduct, ensures equality among students despite their varying social class, promotes regard for schoolmates, and helps build school identity. However, there is no evidence on how school uniforms promote student’s self-expression. On the other hand, individuals arguing against school uniforms claim that when all students are forced to dress the same, it limits their capacity to communicate where buying those uniforms can propagate inequality through posing an extra financial burden to low-income families. Regarding this debate, I will argue that even though school uniforms have promoted equality among students, they do not promote their self-expression.
The arguments in both articles agree that there is no evidence that school uniforms improve students’ self-expression. The first article, a policy report, “School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies,” by Anderson (2002), outlines various advantages of implementing school uniforms policies.
