Pig Lovers and Pig Haters

Question

Description

A LOOK AT PIG HATERS OR PIG LOVERS THROUGH THE SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THEIR HISTORY

MARVIN HARRIS, RELIGIOUS BIAS AGAINST PIGS, AND THE BIBLE

CHOOSE ONE:

THE STORY OF LOVING THE PIG, WAR AND RITUAL, AND THE MARING PEOPLE OF NEW GUINEA PP.46-57

THE STORY OF HATING THE PIG, RELIGIOUS IDEOLOGIES, AND THE BIBLE PP.35-46

In Marvin Harris’s article, Pig Lovers and Pig Haters, he examines the socio-cultural implications of the pig in both religious/biblical history and that of the Maring people, a remote group living in the Bismarck Mountains of New Guinea.

Select one of the two sociological studies.

Review and discuss the importance of the study as written by Harris. Which sociological perspective you believe best explains the findings of the research and why. Point to specific examples to justify your choice.

NOTE:

If selecting the history of pigs in religious/biblical studies, be sure you also use the references to Leviticus and Deuteronomy in the slides in Ulearn as an additional source.

If selecting the Maring people, be sure to discuss the pig festival (kaiko), its relationship to wars with neighboring clans, the planting of small trees called rumbin, and the raising of herds of pigs for the next kaiko. Be sure to reflect not only on the,  but the roles of men and women in those rituals.

Whichever you choose you are to have 3 outside sources (works cited), MLA format, in-text citations from those sources, and they are to include the biblical passages, Marvin’s article and the posted overview of Sociological Perspectives (if you choose religion). If choosing the Maring, The Harris article and sociological perspectives are to be cited, as well as the short article on the Anthropology & Human Condition of the Marings and their rituals posted in Ulearn.

For whichever version of the assignment you choose, the 2-3 page paper is to remain objective, just facts from the study and outside sources as well as justification for your choice of sociological perspective (no first person use of I or me).

Your final paragraph (conclusion) should reflect your own thoughts on what you learned.

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT TO LOOK AT THESE STUDIES BASED ON YOUR REALITY AND WHAT YOU KNOW BUT RATHER STEPPING OUTSIDE OF YOURSELF AND LOOKING AT THESE HISTORICAL STUDIES OBJECTIVELY!

Solution

                                                Pig Lovers and Pig Haters

Marvin Harris’s study attempts to explain the causes of some lifestyles, such as divine taboos, through practical circumstances in their respective places. As a result, he has to explore these practical circumstances by comparing and contrasting different cultures, beliefs, and continents in the world.  As a result, Harris’s article “Pig Lovers and Pig Haters” tries to explain how the Jews and Muslims are pig haters while the Maring people in the South Pacific Melanesian and New Guinea are pig lovers. This paper will focus on practical circumstances explaining why Jews and Muslims are pig haters.

Harris tries to solve why Jews and Muslims hate and condemn the same animal that most of mankind enjoys as a meal. For the Jews, God commanded in Leviticus and Deuteronomy that the pig should not be tasted or touched because it is categorized as unclean (Brondz 22).  God commands in Leviticus 11: 7-8 that…………for help with this assignment contact us via Email Address: consulttutor10@gmail.com
