The term “Beat” used in the phrase “Beat Generation,” was a literacy movement that American writers created to help make the country’s culture and politics after World War II. According to the authors, “Beat” refers to the feeling of feeling used, confused, seek of something, and living against the normal society.
In “This Is the Beat Generation”’ by John Clellon Holmes, he describes “beat Generation” as a generation of individuals who were psychologically affected by the war and lived in the post-war most of them children and teens at the time. This is the generation of individuals who in teenage life experienced a “topsy-turvy world of war bonds, swing shifts, and troop movements” (Holmes, 1952). Regarding their characteristics presented by Holmes, Beat people did not to be slave wages or get jobs because in their lives they had been adjusted by the war to living at a pace that “kills”. As a result, they engaged in selling drugs, black market businesses, excess sexual activities, and excessive indulgence in alcohol, and drugs. To many, this would be referred as the “hippie” era and most of the Beat Generation were characterized as homeless.
Additionally, the “Beat Generation” was also characterized by their dire need for freedom. However, their own lust for freedom does not qualify them as bad individuals because as Holmes argues, all they had known as children and adolescents were war, fear, stress, and pain. According to Holmes “They grew to independent mind on beachheads, in gin mills and USO’s, in past midnight arrivals and pre-dawn departures. Their brothers, husbands, fathers or boyfriends turned up dead one day at the other end of a telegram” (Holmes, 1952). Thus all they were trying to do is to find themselves some sense of freedom and security in their lives. Thus they were fascinating individuals that were even frowned by the elderly…………for help with this assignment contact us via email Address: consulttutor10@gmail.com
